Grow your legal career

There is no ‘Herbert Geer mould’. We look for people who are talented, intelligent and committed to a career in law, and whose skills and experience complement or grow our existing expertise.

Our flat management structure appeals to people who prefer to play an active role in shaping the future direction of the firm. Our partners are involved in all matters, large and small. They lead dedicated and talented teams of special counsel, senior associates, solicitors, graduates and law clerks who thrive on the challenges and complexities of the law.

Continuing learning and education (CLE)

We have an established CLE program and committee, which provides regular in-house sessions on emerging areas of law, new legal developments and technical updates, as well as refresher courses in key areas of practice.

Our partners and solicitors are encouraged to share their advice and experience on different legal issues. We also invite external speakers to share their views on key topics affecting our clients, industry sectors or areas of practice.

Specialist training is provided to meet the professional needs of individuals and practice groups. We also encourage staff to undertake further tertiary study by assisting with fee payment and providing paid study leave.

Secondment opportunities

Secondment to a client or organisation associated with our firm can be a valuable personal and professional development opportunity. Herbert Geer supports staff who are interested in in-house secondments, as well as those interested in moving interstate to another Herbert Geer office.

Achieving a work-life balance

Like all organisations, we expect that our staff will go the extra mile in order to get the job done - we don’t expect you to work long hours just to be seen.

We have introduced a number of different programs to improve the work-life balance of our staff, and to support the interests of our staff outside the office. These include:

  • Time Out Program - a series of seminars and events on non-work related topics
  • NOTLAW Program - aims to encourage staff to participate in activities or learn new skills that are completely unrelated to work
  • Flexible working practices - we provide appropriate infrastructure and support to enable you to work around family and other commitments.
